There are times in life when you just have to draw the shutters, pull the blinds and take the phone off the hook and disappear from the social whirl. As they say, “Career socializing, the hours are good but the pay is lousy.” I for one have Social ADHD and practically have to wear a seatbelt at my desk and paper up the windows to get anything done. Which is why occasionally I have to imitate the infamous Greta Garbo and tell the world “I vant to be alone.”
However, even when we are at our most solitary, we still need a cocktail at our side to help us find our muse and accompany us as we walk down the sometimes cobwebby interiors of our minds. Garbo spent much of her time in glamorous isolation at the Grand Hotel avoiding the paparazzi as she dressed in dark glasses and headscarf and slipped in and out via side passages. In my Garbo phases, I too dress incognito, adopt a slightly haunted expression and go in and out of my apartment via the fire escape. My favorite sip when in seclusion is a version of the martini with Scotch rather than gin or vodka.
- 1oz Scotch
- ½ oz Sweet Vermouth
- ½ oz Dry Vermouth
- 2 dashes orange bitters
In a cocktail shaker, add scotch, sweet and dry vermouth, and orange bitters. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Drink it and remember you are an international woman of mystery.
